Acupuncture treatment in patients with glaucomatous optic neuropathy

Dr. Md. Anwarul Azim, Acupuncturist, Ophthalmologist, Bioenergologist,

under the guidance of professor Svetlana Yurievna Anisimova, M.D.,
Head Doctor of Eye Center “East Sight Recover”.

Background: Glaucoma can damage the optic nerve and causes loss of vision and blindness. Anyone can develop glaucoma. Although a large amount of research is done to improve its diagnostics, prevention and treatment, it remains a major problem of modern ophthalmology.

Our aim is to estimate the application of the ancient eastern Chinese medicine Zhen Jiu therapy /acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)/ for glaucomatous optic neuropathy treatment.

Methods: The following methods of treatment have been used to carry out this study: acupuncture, needlereflexotherapy (NRT) and acupressure (in some cases combined with bioresonant therapy (BRT) by fixed frequency waves (impulses) for 3 year supervision).

The following investigations have been conducted:1) autorefractometry; 2) intraocular pressure (IOP); 3) visual acuity, best corrected visual acuity(BCVA); 4) field of vision; 5) biomicroscopy of eyes;6) examination of eye ground assessment of the condition of optic nerve.

Results: All patients who underwent the procedure of acupuncture and bioresonant therapy independent of their age noticed general somatic symptoms improvement, irritability decrease, sleep normalization as well as visual fatigue elimination.

In all cases an increase of visual acuity from 20% to 40 % enhancement of visual field were recorded.
Some subjective symptoms have also disappeared or have been considerably reduced, such as: mycropsia, metamorphopsia, infringement of color perception.
Upon the termination of treatment all patients have noted significant downturn of light sensitivity in the macular part of retina threshold values.
Repeated inspections 6-9 months later revealed no negative dynamics in pathological changes on the eye ground: visual functions remained stable.

    1. Acupuncture and bioresonant therapy are highly effective and a safe drug free alternative ways to treat glaucomatous optic neuropathy.

    2. The application of the above-mentioned methods results in ultimate or (more often) partial recovery of visual functions.

    3. In carrying out acupuncture and bioresonant therapy no adverse side effects and no complications have been revealed.
